HMG Completes Development of Technology Transfer Portal

Custom Developed Web Application Supports the Office of Technology Transfer at APL

College Park, MD - December 14, 2001 - HMG Technologies (HMG), a regional technology management firm, reported the successful implementation and launch of their custom developed Technology Transfer Portal for the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

Working closely with APL's OTT management and staff, HMG led all aspects of this Technology Transfer project, from plan development through user orientation and rollout. Planned and built within four months, the system provides a central repository and support structure for managing the workflow and entity relationships within their business - Technologies / Inventions, Contacts, and License Agreements.

Within APL, the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) has a stated mission to facilitate the transfer of APL-developed technology to business and industry to benefit the public, foster economic development, and benefit the University. Since the department's inception in 1999, two year cumulative performance statistics include: 269 inventions disclosed, 22 patents issued, 280 patent applications filed, 28 license agreements executed, 51 technologies licensed, 5 spin-off companies incorporated, and more than $2.5 million in licensing income and $3.5 million in related R&D funding secured.

According to Kristin Gray, Assistant Director of Technology Transfer, "We were at a point in the implementation of our strategic plan where all major components of our business processes had to support our transition into a growth phase. The HMG-developed system is helping to facilitate this transition."

The Technology Transfer Portal developed for OTT is a web-based platform, leveraging Microsoft technologies and includes features such as document attachments to key database entities; key field links directly to external sites, such as the US Office of Patents & Trademarks; an automated posting / publication interface to APL's public site; an "event-based" architecture providing the foundation for automated triggers and workflow incorporation. Said Kristin Gray, "The HMG team's expertise and contributions within both business thinking and technology utilization was impressive. They exceeded all expectations we had for the system, and they were true to their word for delivering a solution tailored for our success."
